The British actor Bernard Hill, best known for his roles as Captain Smith in Titanic and King Théoden in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has died at the age of 79. His agent, Lou Coulson, confirmed that Hill died on Sunday.

Hill's career spanned more than 50 years. He began his career on stage, appearing in productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. He made his film debut in 1971's The Last Valley, and went on to star in a number of films, including Gandhi (1982), The Killing Fields (1984), and Gosford Park (2001).

Hill was perhaps best known for his role as Captain Smith in James Cameron's 1997 film Titanic. He also played King Théoden in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Hill's other notable roles included Alan Bennett's A Question of Attribution (1991) and Alan Bleasdale's Boys from the Blackstuff (1982).

Hill was a highly respected actor, known for his versatility and his ability to create complex and believable characters. He was also a generous and supportive colleague, and will be greatly missed by his friends and fans.
